  • Principles of design or organization
    They represent how the artist use the element of art to create an effect and help convey the artists intent
  • Balance
    The visual weight of the elements of the composition. It brings a feeling of stability and comfort. Imbalance causes a feeling of discomfort
  • Symmetry
    Both sides of a composition have the same elements in the same position, as in a mirror image
  • Asymmetry
    The composition is balanced due to the contrast of any of the elements.
  • Radial symmetry

    Elements are equally spaced around the central point
  • Proportion
    It has to do with the comparative size of the part of a single work. Refers to how things fit together and relate to each other in terms of size and scale
  • Contrast
    The arrangement of opposite elements and effects
  • Emphasis
    Is when the artist creates an area of the composition that is visually dominant and commands the viewers attention, usually achieved by contrast
  • Movement
    When the artist uses the elements of art such that they move the viewers eye around and within the image
  • Pattern
    The uniform repetition of any elements of art or any combination thereof
  • Variety
    Is when several elements of art are used to get the attention of the audience and guide the viewers focus through and around the artwork. It is used to keep the rhythm exciting and active in a work of art
  • Rhythm
    The repetition of design line or elements of art in a non-uniform but organized way. This relies on variety
  • Repetition
    Used to make the work seem active. It creates unity within the artwork
