  • A divorce is the legal termination of marriage
  • The Divorce Reform Act widened the ground of divorce which made it easier to obtain and included a single ground for divorce, called the 'irretrievable breakdown of marriage'
  • The irretrievable breakdown of marriage can include;
    • Adultery
    • Unreasonable behaviour
    • Desertion for a period, of at least 2 years
    • Two year separation if both agree to divorce
    • Five year separation if there is no agreement to divorce
  • There is a range of reasons for the increase of divorce including;
    • Changes in laws
    • Declining stigma of divorce
    • Secularisation
    • Rising expectations of marriage
    • Women's increase financial independence
    • Dual burden
    • Modernity and Individualism
