  • People's Movement for Liberation of Angola (MPLA) backed by USSR and Cuba.
• Right wing:

  • National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA)

  Backed by USA + SA in bid to contain communism.

  • If SA hit with sanctions, it would not help fund UNITA.
• Formation of NATO

  NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

  It was formed in April 1949

  Consisted of the USA, Britain, France and 9 other Western countries

  It was a defensive alliance, however Stalin viewed it as aggressive

  It's main purpose was to prevent soviet expansion

  9 May 1955: West Germany becomes member and is remilitarised
