• South African government developed apartheid in Namibia

  • Many methods of control used to strictly enforce this, including SADF (South Africa Defence Forces)

  Counter insurgency unit = main roles to deal with SWAPO and its allies.
• SADF used violence, torture and intimidation

  • Thousands of Namibians fled to bordering states either to join SWAPO or just to escape

  Torture methods used by the SADF included, but were not limited to:

  1. Sleep deprivation
  2. Beating
  3. Electric shocks
  4. Mass detentions
  5. Curfews
  6. Rape
