Welfare State

• Welfare state - it is a complete care package for the entirety of everyone’s lives and it had acted as a safety net
• 1942 - Beveridge report - Beveridge was asked to create this because of lacking resources - this report addressed the 5 evils in society
• The five evils in society are:

  1. Disease
  2. Ignorance
  3. Squalor
  4. Idleness
  5. Want
• They introduced the NHS for disease
• They introduced free education for ignorance - 1944 Butler Act, Tripartite system
• They introduced council housing for squalor
• They introduced more job opportunities for idleness
• They introduced benefits for want - this was for when everything else didn’t work
• The welfare state was trying to make society better and to make society more equal
