Views on the Welfare State

• New Right - the welfare state makes a system that people rely on instead of taking responsibility for their own life. The taxpayers are responsible for paying for others
• Centre left - there will be conflict without the welfare state as it builds social cohesion within society and makes everyone feel like a part of society
• Marxists - the welfare state keeps capitalism as it controls the working class and stops a revolution as the working class is ‘bought off’ because they are given free healthcare and education
• Feminists - the welfare state supports the conventional family structures which maintains patriarchy in society
