    • slums in Hulme were demolished and REPLACED WITH HIGH RISE TOWER BLOCKS
    • New tower blocks were curved rows of low rise flats called Crescents & were an INNOVATIVE DESIGN
    • There were walkways on each level
    • people were above cars
    • large green spaces below flats
  • what happened during 1970s?
    • the crescent flats were recognised as poor design and maintenance
    • the flats couldn't be heated properly due to the oil crisis this meant that heating homes became EXPENSIVE - flats became cold and damp and riddled with COCKROACHES AND VERMIN
    • No sense of community generated due to the crescent shape
    • became unpopular properties for the cities most deprived, anti social people
    • council ended up giving keys to anyone who wanted them
    • drug addictions and crime rates increased during this time
