  • Devonport, Plymouth is located in the south west of England and is on the south coast.
  • Devonport was originally established as a naval dockyard town due to being located on the natural deep water harbour called the Plymouth Sound
  • After WW2, the navy enclosed Devonport's town centre by a wall, splitting the community in two and displacing residents to apartments not suited for family living.
  • There was a decrease in naval jobs after WW2 due to a lack in funding. This led to deindustrilisation in the area.
  • Community groups such as the Pembroke Street Estate Management Board (PSE Management Board) have been heavily involved in the regeneration of Devenport
  • From 2001 to 2011, Devonport benefitted from the New Deal for Communities initiative (NDCs)- which was given to improve some of the most deprived areas of the UK. The NDC addressed employment, health, education, and place-related outcomes, such as; community, crime, and housing.
