  • TSH is released by the pituitary gland and it stimulates the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroxine is released by the thyroid gland and it regulates the BMR and proteinsynthesis needed for growth and development.
  • The pituitary gland releases higher levels of TSH. This binds to receptors of thyroid, stimulating production of thyroxine which increases BMR. Thyroxine then binds to the receptors on the hypothalamus, inhibiting production of TSH. This low TSH binds to receptors of the thyroid gland, inhibiting production of thyroxine, decreasing BMR and proteinsynthesis.
  • If you have an overactive thyroid [hyperthyroidism] you may have difficulty gaining weight and may suffer from insomnia.
  • An underactive thyroid [hypothyroidism] may suffer with fatigue and will struggle to keep weight off.
