  • From 1944 , education system influenced by meritocracy
  • The 1944 Butler Education Act was passed and the Tripartite System was introduced
  • All pupils at the age of 11 sat the 11+ exam which measured their abilities
  • Your score on the 11+ exam would determine which 1 of 3 schools you were sent to. These included:
    Gramma schools - Where you went if you passed the 11+ exam . They offered an academic curriculum which allowed the pupils to reach more academic jobs.
    Secondary Technical - Where you would go if you got 70% of the 11+ exam correct . Taught mechanical and scientific subjects.
    Secondary modern - Where you went if you failed . Offered a non-academic curriculum providing access to manual work
