sound

    Cards (12)

    • Sound
is a wave that carries energy from one place to
      another.
It requires a medium for it to be transmitted.
    • Sound waves are produced by vibrations.
    • Sound waves can be demonstrated on a slinky or a metal spring.
    • Sound is an example of a longitudinal wave.
    • Long wavelength = Low pitch = Low frequency
Short wavelength = High pitch = High frequency
    • Sounds with frequencies below 20 hertz are called infrasound.
    • Sounds with frequencies above 20,000 hertz are called ultrasound.
    • Intensity is a measure of the amount of energy in sound waves. The unit of intensity is the decibel (dB).
      ● The intensity of sound waves determines the loudness of sounds.
      ● Intensity results from two factors:
      ○ the amplitude of the sound waves; and
      ○ how far they have traveled from the source of the sound.
    • small amplitude = quiet sound
      large amplitude = loud sound
    • Intensity results from two factors:
      ○ the amplitude of the sound waves; and
      ○ how far they have traveled from the source of the sound.
    • The speed of sound is the distance that sound waves travel in a given amount of time.
    • Warmer air makes sound travel faster, and colder air makes it travel slower.
