• Glenny 2008 - McMafia: Traces origins of transnational organised crime to the fall of the soviet union and deregulation. Former Communist officials and KGB generals bought up previously nationalised oil and gas assets as the commodities were being sold at very low soviet prices.
• Glenny 2008 - McMafia: The Breakup of the USSR bred chaos and instability leading these oligarchs to buy protection from Russian mafia organisations (most notable being the Chechan Mafia). Russian mafias worked as purely economic organisations and the brand of Chechen mafia was franchised and given to other organisations across the USSR.
