What is meant by ‘first past the post’ and how does it work?
Whoever gets the most votes in the election is the one who wins and gets the power.
Why is this method seen to be democratic?
Each constituency votes for the candidate that they want to represent their views in parliament.
Why may it not be seen as the best method?
It is more complicated because support for certain parties are spread among the country e.g. in the 2015 general election, UKIP and the Green Party achieved over 5 million votes but only had 1 MP each.
What is proportional representation and how is it different to first past the post?
The percentage of votes that each group gets is the proportion of seats that they would get in the place of power.
