    Voting out of self-interest and this is because of changes in the wider society such as there being less traditional industries and more home ownership.
  • Why is turnout seen as an issue in elections?
    Include voter apathy in your explanation. In the general elections in 2015 66% of the electorate voted, in local elections such as in 2012 only 31% of those entitled to vote actually voted. With low turnout it is possible for the majority of governments elected by first past the post is a choice made by the minority of the adult population. In the 2015 general election, the government was elected from 36.9% of the votes cast.
