Criticisms

  • One criticism of the theory is that its too simple. It suggest that short-term memory is a single store, but other research has suggested that it i much more complex and can deal with multiple sensory information at one time , by using separate sections.
  • Neuropsychology has also suggested that long-term memory is also made up of more than one store. Evidence suggest that different types if memories are stored in different parts of the brain. This contradicts what the multistore model says.
  • Another criticism is that the model places too much importance on the role of rehearsal versus meaning. It suggest that in order for information to be passed into the long-term memory, it must be rehearsed. However not all information is is rehearsed. If something is very shocking , it does not need to be rehearsed for it to enter the long term memory. We also don't tend to rehearse sensory information like taste or smell.
  • Other psychologist have suggested that thinking about the meaning of what you are trying to remember (semantic processing) is more important in transferring it to long term memory than simply repeating it. By thinking about the meaning ,it processes the information more deeply and therefore embeds it more deeply in long term memory. Shiffrin realised that semantic processing was also important and added it to the Multi-store model as elaborative rehearsal.
