UN Resolution 84

Cards (3)

  • Truman put pressure on the UN Security Council to condemn the actions of the North Koreans and call on them to withdraw their troops. The USA was the biggest contributor to the UN budget and could influence decisions.
  • The US wouldn't have gotten its way with the UN if it wasn't for the USSR boycotting the UN at this time to get China admitted into the UN. So when the resolution was passed, the USSR was not even at the meeting so could not use its veto. Therefore, Truman was able to claim that this was a UN approved operation.
  • Under Resolution 84, the UN committed itself to using its members' armies to drive North Korean troops out of South Korea. 18 states provided troops - mainly allies such as the UK.
