  • The Great Depression was caused by the Wall Street Crash, which led to widespread unemployment.
  • Interpretation 1 - the 'Popular majority view' was between 1937-1938 and the interpretation was Chamberlain was a hero who stopped the war and kept peace.
  • Interpretation 2 - the 'Political view' was between 1939-1948 and it was believed appeasement was foolish, cowardly and immoral.
  • Interpretation 3 - the 'Orthodox view' was between 1948 to the 1960s and it was believed Chamberlain had good intentions but misjudged and miscalculated Hitler.
  • Interpretation 4 - the 'Revisionist view' was from the 1960s onwards and it was believed that Chamberlain did not have any other options as he faced an aggressive dictator with overwhelming military power.
  • Interpretation 5 - the 'Counter Revisionist view' from the 1990s onwards believed that Chamberlain was part of the problem.
