Structures of the brain

Cards (17)

  • The cerebral cortex is divided into four lobes; frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal.
  • cerebrum contains millions of nerve cells that send signals /messages to the rest of your brain / body + controls thinking, language , creativity, logic and maths
dived into left/right side of brain
  • cerebral cortex : outer layer of the brain responsible for thinking, perceiving, producing / understanding language, musical ability , verbal skills, creativity, logic and math processing

divided into four lobes parietal, occipital, frontal, temporal
  • Cerebellum : responsible for motor coordination , balance + posture and spatial navigation
  • Brain stem: connects the spinal cord, sends / receives signals from senses and controls balance / posture
    • dopamine :neurotransmitter that makes us feel pleasure, involved in sensory / motor skills, and sends information to the cortex
ex: getting fresh air after being inside for so long makes you feel relieved
  • amygdala: part of the rain that processes emotions, located in the frontal lobe
  • Frontal lobe : controls movement, higher thinking skills, recent memory, and personality/emotions
  • temporal lobe :responsible for hearing, the five senses, language and reading
  • parietal lobe : responsible for attention and body sensation
  • Occipital lobe: the part of the brain that processes visual information

Responsible for processing shapes, colours and vision
  • Hypothalamus: regulates adrenaline flow, wakefulness, and is responsible for waking us in the morning
  • hippocampus : part of brain responsible for memory
  • spinal cord : communication system between the brain and the body, surrounded by vertebrae, loss of function can occur if damaged

    responsible for our movement
  • Neurons : cells that carry messages to and fro the spinal cord, responsible for movement and feeling
  • Cervical vertebrae : loss of function in the arms and legs can occur if damaged
  • thoracic vertebrae : loss of function in the trunk and legs can occur if damaged
