osmosis practical

Cards (8)

  • Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration through a partially permeable membrane.
  • take potato samples with the same diameter and length for more accurate results and measure their initial masses using a balance
    • Measure the same volume of the solutions for each potato and add them into the boiling tubes with the potatoes in
    • Each solution will have a different concentration of sugar
    • Leave sample for a few hours or overnight
  • remove the potato samples from each solution and dry them with a paper towel to remove any excess solution that the potato didn't absorb through osmosis
    • Measure the mass of every potato to measure how much solution the potato has absorbed through osmosis
    • Find change in mass by calculating the difference of original mass and mass after being in solution of the potato
    • Then find percentage change of potato by diving the change in mass by the initial mass and multiplying by 100
    • The results should be that the high the conc of sugar solution the more of a decrease in mass due to the lower conc of water in the solution and vice versa
    • This is because osmosis goes from a high to low concentration
