• Oversimplified modal : LTM and STM are more complicated than the modal suggests
• Doesn't take into account the different types of LTM ( procedural memory, episodic memory amd semantic memory)
• Modals main emphasis is on structure: neglects the process elements of memory; elaboration rehearsal
• Has been criticised as being a passive /linear / one way modal
