The multistore model of memory (also known as the modal model) was proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) and is a structural model.
Information passes from store to store in a linear way, and has been described as an information processing model (like a computer) with an input, process and output.
memory - ability to store and retrieve information
memory --> [encoding ->storage -> retrieval ]
Encoding is the process by which we convert sensory input into meaningful representations that can be stored in our long term memories.
sematic encoding : encoding of words and their meanings
visual encoding : encoding of images
acoustic encoding : encoding of sounds , words in particular
atkinson and shiffrin 1968
sensory store : very short duration | large capacity | specific sensory memories for specific senses
short term memory -> duration of about 15 to 30 seconds [avg 18] | capacity -> 7 +-2 chunks of info | can increase capacity through chunking , can increase duration through rehearsal
long term memory - potentially limitless capacity, can be recalled at will, can be accessed by conscious effort | mainly semantic encoding
retrieval - getting info out of the memory store and into the conscious mind
