Unit VI - Developmental Psychology

• Postconventional stage: equality, values, and rights matter (ex: obey rules because that is for good of society)
• New information can be learned at older ages, but not really skills
• The concrete operational stage is marked with the gaining of understanding of concrete concepts and ideas. This includes the understanding of physical attributes of elements, reversibility of said elements, and operating on the identified attributes.
• Harlow's research demonstrated the importance of love and affection, specifically contact comfort, for healthy childhood development. His research demonstrated that children become attached to caregivers that provide warmth and love, and that this love is not simply based on providing nourishment
• Infants with secure attachments confidently explore the novel environment while the parents are present, are distressed when they leave, and come to the parents when they return.
• Gender roles in society means how we're expected to act, speak, dress, groom, and conduct ourselves based upon our assigned sex. For example, girls and women are generally expected to dress in typically feminine ways and be polite, accommodating, and nurturing.
