DNA replication

Subdecks (1)

Cards (11)

  • replicates via semi-conservative replication
  • semi-conservative as half of the strands in each new DNA molecule are from the original DNA molecule
  • means there's genetic continuity between each generation of cells
    1. enzyme DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between the complementary bases on the two strands. makes the helix unwind forming two single strands
  • 2. each original strand acts as a template for the new strand. complementary base pairing means free floating nucleotides are attracted to their complementary exposed base on template strand
  • 3. condensation reaction joins the nucleotides of the new strand together - catalysed by DNA polymerase. hydrogen bonds form between the bases on the new strand and original strand
  • 4. each new DNA molecule contains one strand from the original molecule and one new strand
