  • How to transition towns work to reduce the impacts of globalisation?
Transition towns are a grassroots movement aiming to build resilient communities through sustainable living practices e.g reducing packaging and consumption.
Totnes was Britain's first transition town, it promotes local agriculture, renewable energy etc.
Transition towns are a model for self-sufficiency and reducing the carbon footprint that comes with global supply chains.
They meet local needs through local production, such as purchasing from local growers.
  • How does local sourcing help the environment?
    Reduced carbon footprint.
This is done by local groups and NGOs.
However, although locally sourced products reduce costs, food miles and pollution whilst providing employment, it restricts the type of products available.
  • How does fairtrade reduce environmental degradation?
    Sustainable farming practices.
Fair trade also reduces poor working conditions and global trade inequalities, allowing a larger market to contribute to globalisation.
The benefits of fairtrade seem to outweigh the costs but there are underlying issues e.g debt & pressure to produce.
  • How does recycling reduce the impact of globalisation?
Recycling manages resource consumption and ecological footprints but its effectiveness varies globally.
For example, whilst Brazil has a strong recycling scheme, other places such as India have yet to develop a system.
If recycling was implemented on a global scale, the rewards could be monumental for a sustainable future.
