Cards (3)

  • Girls work harder
Girls put more effort into their work and spend more time doing their homework properly. Girls care more about the opinion of the teachers, they concentrate more in class and have better concentration over longer periods of time - as much as 3 - 4 times as long as a boy at age 14 years. Girls are more organised, they are more likely to bring the right equipment and meet deadlines.

Moir & Jessel suggest that boys and girls brains are 'wired' differently before birth due to the hormonal levels the foetus is exposed to - this means that girls will be better at language and boys at spatial awareness. Therefore, girls will be better at essay based subjects and boys at sports subjects. These they create certain Gender Domains of Subjects- English Language=girls and Sports,Engineering=boys.

Francis suggests that the development of the female identity in school involves cooperative attitudes to teachers, other pupils and authority in general. This links to a supportive attitude to schoolwork. Therefore the association with schoolwork is positive so they put more time and effort into it than boys who fall to follow an anti-school subculture as a result of disobedience.
