  • Filling open positions with inside candidates has advantages:
    1. Knowing a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.
    2. Current employees may also be more committed to the company.
    3. Inside candidates should require less orientation and training than outsiders
  • The Cons:
    1. Can also be a waste of time, since often the department manager already knows whom he or she wants to hire
    2. Rejected inside applicants may become discontented
  • Practical rules can applied if:
    1. Specific skills that aren’t currently available in your company
    2. Your current succession planning or skills inventory systems are inadequate
  • Job posting - means publicizing the open job to employees
  • Rehiring someone who left your employ has pros and cons.
