  Drugs with a low potential for addiction and abuse, and example is lowstrength codeine with other drugs to suppress coughing
• Schedule IV

  Drugs with a lower potential for addiction and abuse than Schedule Ill drugs; ex. Chloral hydrate, diazepam
• Schedule III

  Drugs with a moderate to low potential for addiction and abuse; examples are butabarbital, anabolic steroids
• Schedule II

  Drugs with a high potential for addiction and abuse accepted for medical use in US; examples are codeine, cocaine
• Schedule I


  Drugs with the highest potential for addiction and abuse, they are not accepted for medical use; examples are heroin
