Rotter proposed locus of control as a concept concerned with internal vs external control. Some people have an internal LOC (internals) , these people believe that whatever happens to them is largely based on themselves and their own behaviour.
Some people have an external LOC (externals) believe that whatever happens to them is out of ther control and nothing they will do will change it.
People aren’t either internal or external: LOC is a scale and individuals wary on their position on it; it’s a continuum.
People with a high internal LOC are more able to resist pressures to conform or obey. If a person takes personal responsibility for their actions and experiences, they tend to base their behaviours /decisions on their own beliefs rather than relying on the opinions of others. They also tend to be more confident, more achievement oriented and have higher intelligence. These traits lead to greater resistance of social influence.
