Locus of Control AO3

  • +Research evidence supports the link between LOC & resistance to obedience. Holland repeated Milgram's baseline study and measured whether participants were internals or externals. 57% of internals didn't continue to the highest shock levels, 23% of externals didn’t continue. Internals showed greater resistance to authority in a Milgram - type situation. This shows that resistance is atleast partly related to LOC, which increases the validity of LOC as an explanation af disobedince.
  • -Evidence challenges the link between LOC and resistance. Twenge analysed data from American LOC studies conducted over a 10 year period. The data showed that people became more resistant to obedience but also more external. This suggests that LOC isn‘t a valid explanation of how people resist social influence.
