  • Deviation from ideal mental health
    Jahoda outlined six conditions which were linked with "ideal" mental health
    1. Positive self-attitude: regarding yourself in a positive way
    2. Self-actualisation: realising your potential and feeling fulfilled
    3. Resistance to stress: not becoming easily stressed by situations, experiences or expectations
    4. Personal autonomy: making decisions about your own life
    5. Accurate perception: having a realistic and accurate view of reality around you
    6. Adaptation: being able to adapt to changes in your environment
  • Deviation from Ideal Mental Health
    occurs when someone doesn’t meet a set of criteria for good mental health, Jahoda;
    • no symptoms of distress
    • rational and perceive ourselves accurately
    • self- actualise
    • can cope with stress
    • have a realistic view of the world
    • have good self-esteem and lack guilt
    • independent of others
    • can successfully work, live and enjoy our leisure
  • Someone’s inability to keep a job may be either a failure to cope with the pressures of work (DFIMH) or as a deviation from the ideal of successfully working (DFSN)
