Jahoda outlined six conditions which were linked with "ideal" mental health
Positive self-attitude: regarding yourself in a positive way
Self-actualisation: realising your potential and feeling fulfilled
Resistance to stress: not becoming easily stressed by situations, experiences or expectations
Personal autonomy: making decisions about your own life
Accurate perception: having a realistic and accurate view of reality around you
Adaptation: being able to adapt to changes in your environment
Deviation from Ideal Mental Health
occurs when someone doesn’t meet a set of criteria for good mental health, Jahoda;
no symptoms of distress
rational and perceive ourselves accurately
self- actualise
can cope with stress
have a realistic view of the world
have good self-esteem and lack guilt
independent of others
can successfully work, live and enjoy our leisure
Someone’s inability to keep a job may be either a failure to cope with the pressures of work (DFIMH) or as a deviation from the ideal of successfully working (DFSN)
