  • Gerald Croft is the son of lord and lady Croft, he is a part of the aristocracy, and an upper-class member of society. He is engaged to Sheila Birling, at the start of the play, he is at the Birling’s house to celebrate their recent engagement. Despite his younger age, Gerald agrees with Mr Birling’s capitalist views most of the time. Throughout the play, he tries to help the family and get them out of trouble with the inspector.
  • ‘I was sorry for her and didn't like the idea of her going back to the Palace bar. I didn't ask for anything in return.’
  • Gerald Croft is quite a confident character, although he’s a part of the younger generation, he seems to agree more with Mr Birling, this reflects his higher class, compared to Eric and Sheila. He is honest and admits to the affair with Eva, even though he knew this would affect his relationship with Sheila, he explains that he only helped her because he felt bad. At the end of the play, he hasn’t changed much and agrees with Arthur to try and get the family out of trouble.
