Multi-store Memory Model

Cards (5)

  • Multi-Store Model of Memory:
    • Made of the Sensory Register, STM, and LTM.
    • This model sees the STM as one passive unitary store.
    • Information linearly flows through this.
    • The MSM compares the brain and how it processes information like a computer.
    • The functional processes of the model are attention, maintenance rehearsal, consolidation, and retrieval.
  • The Sensory Register:
    • Where information from the senses is stored, but only for ½ second.
    • It is modality-specific, so whichever sense is registered will match the way it is consequently held.
  • Attention and STM:
    • If paid attention to, sensory information moves into the STM for temporary storage, which will be encoded visually, acoustically, or semantically.
  • Rehearsal Loop:
    • Rehearsing information via the rehearsal loop helps to retain information in the STM and then consolidate it to the LTM.
    • This is predominantly semantically.
  • Retrieval and LTM:
    • Information can be stored in the LTM for any duration.
    • Unlimited capacity.
