Refracted waves

• Refracted waves occur when a wave passes through different materials, resulting in a change in the speed of the wave
• Refracted waves can be caused by changes in the medium
• Refracted waves appear to bend

  • This is why a pencil looks "broken" when you dip it in water.

  
• The greater the change in speed, the more the wave appears to bend
• One example is light waves changing from air to water
• An example is sound waves moving through the air, then a solid
