    • Involves a series of complex thought processes which allow you to make reasoned judgements, assess the way you think, and solve problems effectively.

      Critical thinking
    • Happens when you simply accept the things you are told without examining them. It also happens when you construct thoughts based purely on emotion.

      Non-Critical Thinking
    •  aims to induce the reader’s motivation to read and to activate their schema.
      Pre-reading
    • Rereading the text until you fully understand it. You can look for context clues, predicting, inferencing.

      While reading
    • Checking if you really understood the text. The skills include reflecting, drawing conclusions, and summarizing.
      Post-reading
    • Aims to locate specific information or main ideas in a very short period of time. Ex: examining and Skimming (both are pre-reading skills)
      Rapid reading
    • Getting the general idea of the text. A type of quick reading where you get the main idea and overview of the materials.

      Skimming
    • A reading strategy which aims to get specific information from a given text.

      Scanning
    • A skill wherein the reader browses a material hurriedly and checks whether it is relevant to the information needed.
      Previewing
    • Involves understanding the facts that are directly stated in the printed material.

      Literal Reading
    • condensing a lengthy text into a shorter passage
      Summarizing
    • Restating the ideas from original text.
      Paraphrasing
    • Refers to the process of deducing the facts and ideas not directly stated expressed in the text. A.k.a “reading between the lines”.
      Inferential Reading
    • Refers to close and thorough evaluation of the claims in the text in terms of relevance, validity, and logic.
      Critical Reading
    • to be informed, to be entertained, and to be inspired.
      General purpose of reading
    • A systematics instruction which aims to develop students’ reading skills

      Developmental Reading
    • A more passive type of reading that primarily aims to provide enjoyment and entertainment.

      Pleasure Reading
    • Designed to help students learn basic functional reading ability.
      Functional Reading
    • Aims to correct the effects of poor teaching and learning.
      Remedial Reading
