Haiti lies right on the boundary of the Caribbean and North American plates. There was slippage along a conservative plate boundary that runs through Haiti.
An earthquake is the shaking and vibration of the Earth’s crust caused by sudden movement of the Earth’s plates.
tectonic plate movement: step 1 - hot rock rises, heated by the earths core
tectonic plate movement: step 2 - cool rock sinks back down
tectonic plate movement: step 3 - at the surface, hot rock spreads sideways
tectonic plate movement: step 4 - the oceanic plate descends into the mantle
tectonic plate movement: step 5 - when the rock melts, carbon dioxide is released
tectonic plate movement: step 6 - hot magma rises from the mid - ocean ridges, pushing the plates apart
Convergent plate boundary: Where two plates are moving towards each other.
Divergent Plate boundary: A boundary where two plates move away from each other.
Covergent Plate boundary ( continental + continental ) : when two plates move toward eachother and then collides
Conservative Plate boundary: A plate boundary where two plates move past each other at different speeds in the same direction, or in a different direction and at different / same speeds
Both earthquakes and volcanoes are located along different edges of different tectonic plates all over the world.
