• British put a heavy tax on salt production and any Indian trying to access salt for themselves was viewed illegal
• 12 March 1930 - Gandhi took his followers on a 26 day march over 240 miles to protest. His aim: to access natural salt at sea
• Gandhi was arrested but later set free
