The Triple Alliance, 1882

• In 1882 Italy joined the Dual Alliance because they wanted to reduce the possibility of conflict with Austria over Istria and Tyrol
• The Triple Alliance was finalised in May 1882
• The terms of the Triple Alliance were: ▪ Germany and Italy would support each other if either was attacked by France ▪ If any were attacked by another power they would provide mutual support ▪ If Austria-Hungry went to war with Russia Italy would remain neutral ▪ The alliance was to be kept secret
