Scientists extract a small sample of cells or tissues (the explant)
Often from meristems i.e. from shoot tips, root tips, apical buds.
The sample is sterilised – ethanol, sodium dichloroisocyanurate.
This prevents infection from bacteria, viruses or fungi.
Explant is placed in sterile growth medium to stimulate mitosis (contains auxin).
The sample divides into a callous.
The callus is divided up and placed in separate growth mediums
Once big enough the plants are potted into compost.
Abiotic factors are carefully controlled
