  • Physicians were male doctors that trained at university for 7 years but had little practical experience. They used vademecums and clinical observations to diagnose and treat patients.. Only the rich could afford them.
  • Apothecaries trained through apprenticeships and gave remedies. The majority of them were males but some were 'wise' women. They were the most accessible and common form of treatment.
  • Barber-Surgeons performed mild surgical procedures and had very little training. They were used by the poor and cut hair on the side.
  • People without medical knowledge who sold 'treatments' were known as Quack Doctors.
