    • Before starting a journey, check that the brakes are working by ensuring they do not feel spongy or slack, testing them as you set off, and making sure the vehicle does not pull to one side
    • Recommended tyre pressures for a car can be found in the manufacturer's guide, pressures should be checked using a reliable pressure gauge when tyres are cold, including the spare tyre, and valve caps should be refitted
    • Adjust the head restraint so the rigid part is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable for the best protection in the event of a crash
    • To check tyres for sufficient tread depth and safe general condition, ensure there are no cuts or bulges, and that there is 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference

    • To switch on the rear fog light(s), operate the switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary), check the warning light is on, and explain its use
    • Switch headlights from dipped to main beam by operating the switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary) and check with the main beam warning light
    • To check engine oil level, open the bonnet, identify the dipstick/oil level indicator, and check the oil level against the minimum and maximum markers
    • To check engine coolant level, open the bonnet, identify high and low level markings on the header tank or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to the correct level
    • To check hydraulic brake fluid level, open the bonnet, identify the reservoir, and check the level against high and low markings
