  • Research is a process of executing various mental acts for discovering and examining facts and information to prove the accuracy or truthfulness of your claims or conclusions about the topic of your research
  • Research requires you to inquire or investigate about your chosen research topic by asking questions that will make you engage yourself in top-level thinking strategies of interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, criticizing, appreciating, or creating to enable you to discover truths about many things you tend to wonder about the topic of your research work
  • Inquiry is a learning process that motivates you to obtain knowledge or information about people, things, places, or events by investigating or asking questions about something you are inquisitive about
  • Research studies have led to medical breakthroughs, advances in technology, and understanding and solving problems in education, business, economy, and society
  • Characteristics of a good research:
    • Realistic as it requires gathering data and obtaining information about the area of study
    • Analytical as it is conducted in a scientific, systematic, and structured manner using standard methods
    • Provides possible solutions to real-world problems and offers potential technological advancements and developments
    • Offers practical, innovative, and novel solutions and contributions to different bodies of knowledge
    • Is scholarly work following the highest ethical standards
  • Types of research:
    • Pure Research: aims to increase knowledge about something
    • Applied Research: applies research to societal problems or issues to make positive changes in society
  • Types of research based on purpose:
    • Descriptive Research: defines or gives a verbal portrayal of a person, thing, event, group, or situation
    • Correlation Research: shows relationships or connectedness of two factors, circumstances, or agents called variables
    • Explanatory Research: elaborates on the reasons behind relationships of two factors and the ways by which such relationships exist
    • Exploratory Research: finds out how reasonable or possible it is to conduct a research study on a certain topic
    • Action Research: studies ongoing practices of a school, organization, community, or institution to bring improvements
  • Research process:
    • Research is methodological and follows specific procedures
    • A research design is necessary to produce good research
    • A research design is a plan reflecting the series of activities that must be accomplished until the completion of a research study
  • Problem statement: Attachment is a strong reciprocal emotional bond between an infant and a primary caregiver, as studied by Schaffer and Emerson in 1964 to identify stages of attachment and the impact of 'sensitive responsiveness' on attachment formation
  • Literature review helps identify research gaps and areas unexplored in the study of attachment, aiding in bridging these gaps to add to the body of knowledge
  • Theoretical framework is crucial as it forms the foundation of a research study, using theories to examine and analyze collected data
  • Research strategy involves planning data collection methods like interviews, surveys, and documents, detailing what data to collect and how to collect it
  • Data validation and analysis require establishing validity constructs like confirmability, transferability, credibility, generalizability, or dependability to ensure the research study is valid and reliable
  • Ethics in research involves establishing moral principles to ensure the validity and trustworthiness of research findings, including respecting subjects' rights, maintaining confidentiality, and avoiding research misconduct like plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification
