• From 1957 Cassa per il Mezzogiorno focused on industrial development.
• The Cassa per il Mezzogiorno spent €2.3billion over 25 years under the Vanoni Plan.
• The Vanoni Plan measures created 300,000 new jobs.
• Introduced grants, subsidies and tax relief to attract new private companies.
• 40% of all new state companies to set up in Mezzogiorno
• New industrial estates were built.
• Local workers received training
• A new airport was built at Calabria.
• A new motorway was built - The Autostrada del Sole, it stretches from north to south for over 1000 km and has improved access to the Northern markets
• Four growth poles were identified to become centres of economic growth e.g. Bari-Brindisi-Taranto industrial triangle.
• Heavy industries such as petrochemicals and steel have opened here e.g. Finsider Steelworks.
• Finsider Steel works is Italy's largest steelworks located in Taranto.
• The Naples and Latina regions have developed chemical, oil refining and ship building industries.
• In Sicily, oil refining and petro-chemical industries were set up.
