Did Cassa work?

• Partly, the economy has become more diversified, 300,000 new jobs have been created, The region is less dependent on agriculture and out migration has slowed.
• However, little spin off employment was created.
• 2 million jobs have been lost in agriculture so not enough were created in industry to counteract this.
• There was an over reliance on state investment rather than encouraging local industry and attracting MNCs.
• Most of the industrial development was too concentrated on coastal areas e.g. Naples.
• The interior areas of the Apennines were largely unaffected and remained poor.
• The power of the Mafia has put off some MNC’s.
• Unemployment is still very high  in comparison to other parts of Italy and the EU.
• The Cassa was disbanded in 1984 since then the region has received EU Structural Funds.
• €13 billion invested 1989-1993.
