The Somerset Floods 2014 (Case Study)

Cards (8)

  • River parrot and River Tone flooded because of low-lying land that floods easily; heavy, continuous rainfall and moors without crops to absorb the rain. Also, the rivers had a build up of sediment and leaves which slow the absorption of water.
  • To reduce flooding, woodlands were placed next to the river to reduce the mount of surface run-off because the woodland would soak up the water
  • The rivers where dredged to remove the excessive amount of sediment that was blocking the water absorption into the ground
  • To stop the flooding, pumps were added to pump the water to the sea
  • to stop the flooding sea walls were placed to protect houses and raised barriers were added too
  • After the storms; streets flooded, schools closed, wildlife drowned, the value of homes went down and land was ruined and could no longer be planted on
  • how effective has flood management been in this case study?
it has reduced flooding significantly and the rivers have been restored however, homes, jobs and personal lives have been affected
  • How are Depressions formed?
Depressions are formed by the meeting of warm and cold air masses, leading to the lifting of warm air and the formation of clouds and precipitation. The rain gets heavier as the cold front moves closer and continues until the warm front approaches and the rain stops.
