  • Brainstorming is a process of writing down specific topics gathered from different sources
  • There are 5 strategies under brainstorming: cubing, free writing, listing, mapping (webbing or clustering), researching
  • Cubing - an idea is examined from six distinction viewpoints
  • Free writing - this is another way of brainstorming; you may set a time limit and several words or pages JUST WRITE. Without inhibitions
  • Mapping which is Sometimes called webbing or clustering - it involves writing down ideas and then making connections by associating similar ideas with color coded circles
  • Researching - you must search from the library or websites and make a list or map of the new ideas
  • A Graphic organizer uses visual symbols that express thought ideas, knowledge concepts, and the relationships between them. Makes easier for writer. Helps writer to be more coherent
  • There are 3 types of graphic organizer; basic outline , Venn diagram, and topical organizer
  • Basic outline- thesis statement or major idea
  • Venn diagram - use to show similarities and differences between two or more people, objects or ideas
  • Topical organizer - allows the writer to map out the idea.
  • Different kinds of graphic organizer ; mind map, flow chart and hierarchical topical organizer
  • Mind maps used to present your knowledge of a concept or idea.
  • Flowchart is used to show the different steps in a process.
  • Hierarchical topical organizer shows the order of ideas and their place in hierarchy
  • Topic outline is a list of ideas arranged in a specific order . Uses keywords or key phrases instead of complete sentences
  • Sentence outline - it is a hierarchical outline imposed of sentences instead of keywords or key phrases. Books, stories and essays. More specific than topic outline.
