• Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.
• Each amino acid molecule has a central carbon atom called the alpha carbon with single covalent bonds to four other atoms. One of these is the nitrogen atom of an amine group and another is the carbon atom of a carboxyl group.
• The carboxyl group is acidic and the amine group is basic, so amino acids are amphiprotic.
