  • Portable water means water that is safe to drink
  • An aquifer: is water that is stored in rocks underground. This water may have impurities like - Dissolved salts
    -The pH may be too low/ high
    -Microbes
    -Decaying matter etc..
    Fresh water needs to be purified before it is portable
  • First, the water passes through screens that are made of metal bars, these screens trap twigs & leaves. After, this water goes through a settlement tank, these tanks are used to settle out sand, soil and mud by gravity. Then, the water goes through another tank which has aluminium sulfate and lime, then the remaining particles of mud + grit clump together and sink to the bottom. Then, the water goes through a special filter that has sand and gravel Then, the water goes through another tank where chlorine is added. Lastly, the pH of the water is checked to see it is suitable for drinking (pH 7)
  • Domestic uses for water: drinking, cooking, general sanitation and gardening
  • Agriculture uses of water: as a drink for animals and for watering crops
  • Industrial uses: as a solvent, as a coolant and heated to make steam used to generate electricity
