United Party (Jan Smuts, mainly English descent, believed total segregation was impossible and African labour should be stabilised) vs. National Party (Dr Daniel Malan, mainly Afrikaner descent, believed in total separation)
The National Party wanted: Africans to be viewed as temporary city dwellers, be forced to make a periodic rural return to meet (Afrikaner) farming needs, and have no parliamentary representation
The National Party wanted: The prohibition of mixed marriages, thebanning of black trade unions, and stricter job reservations - the first terming of Apartheid
Due to the weight given to rural electorates, UP was defeated, NP won majority of the contended seats but a minority of the votes cast - the NP won70/153 seats and formed a government with Afrikaner Party support and ruling until 1994
