  • bipolar disorder - formerly called manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
  • hypomania - same as mania but around 4 days or less
  • cyclothymic disorder
    • for at least 2 years (at least 1 year in children and adolescents) there have been numerous periods with hypomanic symptoms that do not meet criteria for a hypomanic episode and numerous periods with depressive symptoms that do not meet criteria for a major depressive episode.
    • less severe and less lasting symptom than BD
  • bipolar II disorder
    • depressive episode required
    • can be mixed with hypomania
  • Bipolar I disorder
    • at least one episode of mania or mixed,
    • depressive episode not required,
    • can be more severe
  • major depressive
    • five (or more) of the symptoms have been present during the same 2-week period and
    • represent a change from previous functioning; at least one of the symptoms is either (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of interest or pleasure
    • episodic
    • With a gap of at least 2 months between them.
  • mania
    • distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and
    • abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy, "lasting at least 1 week" and
    • present most of the day, nearly every day
