Crowd Behaviour

Cards (4)

    1. Firstly, we feel less of a chance of consequences, which leads to a disregard for norms/laws against aggression. This leads to increased aggression.
  • 2. De-individuation also leads to a diffusion of responsibility, as it’s shared through the crowd. People feel less personal guilt/responsibility for their aggressive actions towards others, which leads to more aggression.
  • 3a. As an individual, we are constantly monitoring our own behaviour, checking to see if it’s consistent with our norms. This means we act rationally, in-line with our norms, which leads to less aggression.
  • 3b. In the de-individuated state, we lose self-awareness and stop monitoring and regulating our own behaviour. This means we ignore norms, and don’t think about the long-term consequences of our behaviour and behave emotional, compulsive and disinhibited, leading to aggression.
